Hmoud Al Attawi Born: 1986, Sajir, Saudi Arabia. Lives and works in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Hmoud Al Attawi is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the intersection of Saudi history, contemporary life, and the nuanced politics of human interaction. Through sculptures, installations, prints, and photography, he examines how personal and societal "policies" influence identity, memory, and behavior. His art highlights the invisible negotiations that guide relationships, while drawing inspiration from nature’s profound effect on human dynamics. By weaving narratives that bridge the past and present, Alattawi questions the boundaries between tradition and innovation. Deeply rooted in an anthropological approach, Alattawi’s practice reflects his ongoing inquiry into collective, communal, and personal histories. Whether reflecting on the myths of Saudi culture or reinterpreting modern realities, his work creates spaces for dialogue and introspection. His exploration of how memory and cultural narratives evolve is complemented by a fascination with the interplay between natural and human-made environments, challenging viewers to rethink their connections to history and to one another.
Since founding Wasm Studio in 2016, based in Diriyah Jax District, Alattawi has championed the development of the Saudi art scene, mentoring emerging artists and establishing programs that bridge local and global creative practices. His accomplishments include receiving prestigious grants, such as from Misk Art Institute in 2020 and the Diriyah Gate Development Authority in 2021, where his work was featured in the historic Turaif district during the Diriyah Art Biennale. In 2022, he expanded his artistic horizons through an Art residency in Avignon, France, immersing himself in cross-cultural narratives and collaborations. Alattawi’s art transcends disciplines, blending sculpture, storytelling, and multimedia installations to forge connections between past and present. His work provokes reflection on the human condition and the personal "policies" that guide our relationships, offering new perspectives on the evolving narratives of culture, history, and identity.
